Good questions. Clear answers.
Finding screens and Settings
On a Mac: the sidebar lists every screen, with Settings under them. + Add in the toolbar records an expense, income or a transfer.
On iPhone: the tab bar holds Today, Transactions, Accounts and More, with + beside them to record an expense, income or a transfer. Every other screen is in More, and Settings is its last row.
On iPad: the sidebar lists every screen and ends with Settings. In a narrow window, the tab bar appears as on iPhone.
App Lock, Face ID and Touch ID
On a Mac: turn on Settings › Privacy & Security › “Require authentication to open Maal”. Maal then asks for Touch ID, your Apple Watch or your Mac’s password.
On iPhone and iPad: turn on the same setting. Maal asks for Face ID or Touch ID, or your device passcode if that does not work. One unlock lasts until Maal goes to the background, and Maal hides your accounts as soon as it leaves the screen.
If Maal never asks for Face ID, open your device’s Settings › Face ID & Passcode › Other Apps and turn Maal on.
Use Maal on two devices
Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on both devices.
Keep the ledger in iCloud on each, not On My Mac or On This Device. Settings › Privacy & Security shows where the ledger is kept.
Open Maal on the second device: it finds the same ledger. Changes arrive after a short while, and settings such as your main currency, zakat method and reminder choices come with them. App Lock, hidden amounts and language are set on each device.
On iPhone and iPad, changes can arrive in the background, and Maal replans your reminders without being opened.
If the second device asks for the subscription, choose Restore Purchases with the App Store account that bought it.
Restore a purchase
Choose Restore Purchases on Maal’s subscription screen, or in Settings › General › Subscription.
Check that the App Store uses the Apple Account that bought the subscription. The App Store account can differ from the account used for iCloud.
If access is still missing, check the subscription with Apple, allow the app to reconnect, and contact support with the app version and the message shown. Do not buy again just to troubleshoot.
Check iCloud sync safely
Sync behavior on Mac, iPhone, iPad must be checked against the final released builds. These steps do not require you to share your financial records.
Check the sync status in Settings › Privacy & Security. An On My Mac or On This Device ledger does not sync.
Confirm that each device uses the same iCloud Apple Account, that iCloud is available for Maal, and that the devices have a working connection and available storage.
Keep Maal open and allow time for changes to arrive. If Maal says “Your ledger is read-only” or that it couldn’t open the ledger, choose Try Again and note the exact message.
Back up or export the records you can access. Do not erase the ledger, restore over it, remove iCloud data, or sign out of iCloud as a quick sync fix. Contact support first if the copies do not agree.
Keep access to your records
A lapsed subscription does not delete your records. The subscription screen keeps Back Up and Export available, and iCloud sync continues. Save a copy before a restore or any deliberate erasure.
A backup and a CSV export serve different purposes. Keep the original backup file when you need a restorable copy, and keep exported files somewhere you control.
Manage or cancel a subscription
Use the Apple Account that purchased the plan. On Mac, open the App Store, select your name, open your account, and choose Subscriptions. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > your name > Subscriptions. Select Maal and review the available actions.
Apple shows the next renewal or expiry date. Deleting Maal or erasing its data does not cancel a subscription. Refund requests go to Apple.
Notifications, Spotlight, and privacy
Maal asks to send notifications when it first has a real reminder to deliver. Review Settings › Reminders, where “Remind me on this device” turns reminders off on one device, and the system’s notification-preview settings if record names should not appear on your Lock Screen. Notifications never include amounts.
Account and goal names appear in Spotlight only if you turn on “Show account and goal names in Spotlight” in Settings › Privacy & Security. Turn it off to remove them. For deliberate ledger deletion, follow the privacy page and read every confirmation.
Widgets
Maal has two widgets: Safe to Spend, small or medium, and Coming Up, medium. Add them the way you add any widget on your device.
A widget shows no amount while App Lock is on or amounts are hidden, and never shows an amount beside a name. If it says “Open Maal to see today’s figure”, open Maal once: the widgets read a file Maal writes when it runs, and never open your ledger.
Contact support
Use the contact form with the topic Support. Give your device, operating-system version, Maal version, and the steps that led to the issue. Leave names and amounts out of what you describe.
Do not send your ledger, backup archive, bank statement, password, recovery code, or payment-card details. Messages go to a private issue tracker on GitHub. No response-time promise is made.
